Wafid vs GAMCA: What Is the Difference?
GAMCA has been replaced by Wafid. Learn what changed, what stayed the same, and what it means for your GCC visa medical appointment.
If you've been searching for "GAMCA medical" and keep seeing "Wafid" instead, you're not alone. GAMCA (Gulf Approved Medical Centers Association) has been officially replaced by Wafid — the new unified platform for GCC visa medicals. Here's everything you need to know.
What Was GAMCA?
GAMCA was the organization that managed the network of approved medical centres across South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka) for GCC visa applicants. For years, "doing your GAMCA" meant visiting one of these approved centres for a chest X-ray, blood tests, and a physical examination before travelling to the Gulf.
What Is Wafid?
Wafid (Arabic for "delegate" or "incoming") is the new digital platform launched by the GCC countries to standardize and digitize the entire pre-employment medical process. It replaced GAMCA around 2020–2021 and has since become the standard for all GCC visa medicals.
Key Differences
- Technology: Wafid is a fully digital system with online booking, digital result delivery, and API integration with GCC immigration systems. GAMCA was largely paper-based.
- Centres: The same authorized medical centres (previously GAMCA-approved) now operate under the Wafid system. The centres themselves haven't changed significantly.
- Results: Wafid results are delivered digitally to both the applicant and the GCC employer/sponsor — no more physical certificates required in most cases.
- Booking: Booking is done through the official Wafid portal (wafid.com) with a passport number and reference number from the sponsor.
What Stayed the Same?
The tests themselves have not changed. You'll still be screened for tuberculosis (chest X-ray), HIV, Hepatitis B and C, and a general physical examination. The standards and the "Fit / Unfit / Retest" outcome categories remain the same.
Do I Search for "GAMCA" or "Wafid"?
Both terms are used interchangeably by applicants. Officially you should refer to Wafid, but when speaking to agents, family, or colleagues, "GAMCA" is still commonly used and universally understood.
Bottom Line
GAMCA = the old name. Wafid = the current system. Same tests, same centres, better technology. When booking your GCC visa medical, use the Wafid portal — and if you need help navigating the process, we're here.
